Sun God festival is going down on Friday May 13th, 2011 at UCSD. The festival is held annually and is known for it’s big name line ups. This year, you can expect performances by Wiz Khalifa, Jimmy Eat World, Mike Posner, Big Sean, and LA Riots just to name a few.

If you are unfamiliar with Sun God, it is an annual campus festival at the University of California, San Diego (La Jolla, California). The event takes place on the 17th week of every spring quarter (usually) and is a noon to midnight musical celebration.

Sun God is ran solely by their Associated Students Concerts and Events office. The festival is dedicated for their students to unwind after midterm exams and will be celebrating its 27th anniversary on Friday, May 13th. Last year, the festival sold out all of its student and guest wrist bands.

Ricky Ross

Ricky Donnell Ross (born January 26, 1960), also known as ”Freeway” , is a convicted drug trafficker best known for the “drug empire” that he presided over in Los Angeles, in the early 1980s. As several rappers grew up in poverty, in the middle of the drug world, Ross had a huge influence on the hip-hop community. Rappers Rick Ross and Freeway have acquired their moniker from Ricky Ross. The nickname “Freeway” came from Ross’s ownership of several properties along the Harbor Freeway. His old house he grew up in is where a freeway now stands. With a similar story to Frank Lucas, Ross was once the most successful business man in America until he met his descent.

“Wanted to be Freeway Rick/He showed me how turn a stolen 5.0 into a brick.”
The Game – Ol’ English

It was through Fraser Brown, a college friend, that Ross was introduced to cocaine, where he found a connection to purchase cheap Nicaraguan cocaine. Ross began distributing the cocaine around $10,000 less per kilo than the average street price, his point of distribution being the Bloods and Crips street gangs(which has probably contributed to L.A.’s notorious gang violence). Ross claims to have made $2 million in one day.

“Nearly half of America’s largest cities is one-quarter black/ That’s why they gave Ricky Ross all the crack.”
Mos Def – Mathematics

In 1996, Ross was sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of trying to purchase more than 100 kilograms of cocaine from a federal agent.  The decision in Ross’s case was brought to a federal court of appeals where his life sentence was reduced to 20 years. His sentence has since been reduced further for being a model prisoner and he was moved to a halfway house in California in March 2009, and was released on September 29, 2009.

Out of the meeting between Obey and Generic Surplus came the idea to combine two relevant shoe styles, combing elements of both designs and creating a hybrid style that was simplistic, wearable, and affordable. The final product was a mesh, breathable shoe that mixed elements of a boat/dock shoe including metal eyelets and work-wear laces. The foot bed and tongue are branded with a minimal constructivist-styled OBEY label and Generic Surplus branding on the heel. The Obey X Generic shoe is offered in three colors: natural, navy, and tobacco for the price of $65.
