The highly anticipated feature “Stay Gold – The Emerica Video” premiered on Tuesday, August 17 at the Ford Amphitheater in Hollywood, California. The premier was open to the public, but limited tickets were available. If you weren’t able to attend the premier or had no clue about the Emerica movement have no fear because on September 1st, the feature “Stay Gold” will be released to the public on DVD and iTunes. I got the unique opportunity to meet and talk with Fashawn yesterday at Sole Technology in Lake Forest, CA. I had the chance to discuss new and current music from Fashawn as well as his current tour with Wiz Khalifa.

Recognized as a leader in Central California’s hip hop scene, steering a vibrant pack of young artists with his innovative style and originality in his music, Fashawn is more than ready to take on the world with his debut album “Boy Meets World”. Produced entirely by Los Angeles native Exile, “’Boy Meets World’ is just a story about a kid growing up,” explains Fashawn. “Leimert Park, what’s cool?” It’s always refreshing to see hard work accompanied with a positive attitude paying off. Dom Kennedy has become the perfect example of this statement, if you put in the effort you will experience success. “White Sox fitted/im chillin on top/rookie in the game but I’m feeling like I’m not.”

I have been following the career of this Leimert Park native since Dom’s self-produced, promoted and distributed “25th Hour” mix-tape. PC: Cali Buss thanks for taking the time to fly with us here at Pilots Cabin, much Love & Respect.  My first question for you is, before stepping into the music game, who was Cali Buss?

CB: “Just another kid on the street… trying to find my way in the world.”

PC: Listening to your lyrics on “let it be” you talk about the game of basketball even being in a video game (talk about playing basketball in Hawaii and how your experience shaped you)

CB: “I had the time of my life playing basketball at such a high level.  Not a lot of people in this world know what it’s like to have 10,000+ fans screaming at you.  The best part was being able to choose myself in College Hoops 2K7 (UCD) and EA Sports March Madness ‘08 (Chaminade).  It’s amazing to see that a lot of the guys I’ve played with throughout the years are now in the NBA.”

PC: Thats got to bring a sense of satisfaction knowing that you can and have played with some of the top athletes in the game of basketball.  There is a saying “don’t wear your heart on your sleeve” talk a little bit about your “heart on your sleeve” and what it means to you.

CB: “The heart on my sleeve is a tattoo on my left shoulder, showing what my heart is made of…  It is in the shape of an actual beating heart, arteries and all, fused with a boom box and basketballs for speakers.   It was originally designed to be on a T-shirt, but it ended up on me.  My good homie Byron Hontiveros and I came up with the idea when we were at UC Davis.”

PC: You are very passionate about the game of basketball and music, talk a little bit about what music and basketball means to you.

CB: “Man, I don’t know where to begin – who knows where I’d be without those two things… I feel like they go together so well, and they give kids the chance to do something with their lives instead of getting into trouble on some dumb shit.”

PC: Haaa thats true, its more of a culture, you rarely see one without the other.  You were recently on a track titled “The official 2010 Lakers Song” produced by Mike Mac, what do the Lakers mean to you and the city of LA, do you think they repeat this year?

CB: “C’mon now Meesh, I BLEED purp & gold.  The city of angels raised me… as much as people want to talk bad about this place, there’s nowhere I’d rather be.  I don’t see why the Lakers can’t pull off another 3-peat.  They are the most talented and best coached team in the league.”

PC: LA Lakers all day every day…thats whats up.  How long have you been rapping/making music?

CB: “I don’t remember exactly when, but probably around 8^th grade is when it all started… I wasn’t in the studio recording anything yet, but I was fuckin around a little bit.”

PC: Where are your roots in music, what genre or who has influenced you the most creatively as an artist?  Where do you get your inspiration musically?

CB: “To tell you the truth man… K-Earth 101 – that used to be my favorite radio station when I was a kid.  I used to roll around with my grandma and we’d jam out.  As I got older, I went into that classic rock stage for a little bit, mostly because of my two older brothers Mike and Steve.  Tupac snapped me out of that though – soon as I heard “Dear Mama” it was a wrap.  I started turning all my poetry into raps.  Fortunately I was unfortunate enough to see a lot of stuff most people don’t – and I think that’s what inspires me to write about the things around me… all the things I see.”

PC: How do you feel about the current music artist are creating now?

CB: “Unlike most artists in my shoes, seeing as that I’m unsigned, I don’t feel the need to knock what other people do.  Obviously, it’s working… I mean, no other genre in the last 10 – 15 years has stamped its prints on the world like Hip-Hop.  We are the voice of the people… the youth. The problem is that you don’t hear enough variety played within our spectrum, and that’s when it starts to sound watered down and monotonous. “

PC: I feel you…How do you feel you can contribute to the current Hip-Hop game or what do you bring that’s new to the table for listeners?

CB: “Well… I feel like West Coast Hip-Hop in particular is highly underrated.  Except for a few of the big name artists, nobody else gets the airplay or the recognition they deserve.  I couldn’t tell you why that is, but I hope to change it.  Everybody knows we started this gangsta shit, but there is so much more that the West has to offer both musically and lifestyle-wise.”

PC: I agree it seems like your either a headlining hiphop act or are considered an underground artist.  There are a lot strong new artists coming out of the west with a lot of buzz…I’m anxious to see where we take the music game to in the near future.  Who is CRT and what does it stand for (both literally and figuratively)

CB: “CRT stands for Cali Regime Team.  The group was originally created by myself and childhood friend Lorca “Highness” Ghanbari.  Since then, it’s turned into more of a street following.  The people that support us, and have stuck with us through the happiness and heartache that this music game throws our way, really make up what it is…”

PC: You currently have an album out on iTunes titled “Movie Meant” can you explain the title of this album and talk a little bit about the content or favorite tracks?

CB: “A lot of times when people sit down and pay attention to the content of my music, they say stuff like “your life is like a movie” or “you should write a screenplay.”  I just went off that because I felt it fit.   And it’s not like I’m biased or anything, but every track on that album is special to me.  We recorded the majority of “Movie Meant” in a little home-studio set up in my old apartment – it’s crazy to see how far we’ve come.”

PC: Talk about some current producers/artists you are working with or have previously been involved with.

CB: “The majority of “Movie Meant” was produced by Timeless Beats.  Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time working with Los Angeles music producer/songwriter Mike Mac, and also Travis “Time Travel” Margis up at Sony Threshold Studios.  West Coast rapper Highness was featured on the songs “Cruisin’” and “Straight from the Boulevard.”  Female rapper Asia Lee was featured on the song “Y’all Know Me.”  LA singer KamPAIGN was featured on the songs “In California” and “I Wish I.”  New Jersey producer “Cassius” Clay Hillman produced and sang on the song “Trouble Me.”  And reggae-legend Lloyd Brown was featured on the song “Light My Spliff.””

PC: What are your future plans (new or upcoming projects)?

CB: “I’m working on a number of different projects right now… My single “I Need You” just came out on iTunes, and I’m working on my first studio album which I would like to release by summertime.”

PC: I would love for some new Cali Buss music to drop in the summer.  What is next for Cali Buss and CRT?

CB: “The next step is to do a tour after the album is finished.  I’m not sure when or where we’re gonna go yet, but it will be one to remember…  SO STAY TUNED!”

Hey everyone, so I’ve particularly taken quite an interest in Asher Roth and his crew known as “The Roth Boys”. Maybe some of you know who I’m talking about and maybe some of you don’t, but all of you will get to know them a little bit more. How? Well, Luckily I happened to get a Q&A interview with each of them and got to ask them questions generated by the team and dedicated Pilots Cabin fans.

Magic did not show up for the game…I’m very dissapointed, but this commercial definitely cheered me up. Magic needs to continue the momentum throughout all 48 minutes…it’s funny how Gasol and D.Howard traded places tonight, Howard was going soft and Gasol was making him pay. I seriously think that Magic is the better team here, they just need to show up.

On a side note I truly believe that Cavs vs Lakers would have been a way better series. Let us know what you think.
